DAX Measure

What it is

A DAX measure is a calculation written in DAX, the formula language of Power BI, that is evaluated according to the filters applied to a report. For example, a measure for total sales changes as the user selects a year or region. It looks like a spreadsheet formula but is evaluated in the context of the report's current filters, so the same measure gives different answers for different selections.

Why it matters

Measures keep calculations consistent. Defining revenue once as a measure means every chart uses the same logic instead of each report author inventing their own. Analysts specify measures in plain English first, for example "net sales exclude cancelled orders", and then check that the formula matches that definition.

Example

A Lumen Retail measure might be written Total Sales = SUM(Sales[Amount]). Another, Sales Last Year, reuses it to compare the same period a year earlier, and both respond when a manager picks a region. The analyst checks the results by comparing a filtered measure with a count taken directly from the data, to confirm that it matches.
