Power/Interest Grid

What it is

A power/interest grid is a two-by-two chart that places stakeholders by how much power they have over the project and how interested they are in it. The four boxes suggest an approach: manage closely, keep satisfied, keep informed or monitor.

Why it matters

Analysts have limited time. The grid helps decide where to spend it, so high-power, high-interest people get close attention while others get lighter, regular updates. It also stops the common mistake of sending every update to everyone, which trains busy people to ignore project messages altogether and miss the important ones.

Example

At Orchard Health Clinics, the medical director has high power and high interest, so she joins weekly reviews. The facilities manager has high power but low interest, so he gets a short monthly summary and a quick check before any room-booking changes.
