Swimlane Diagram
What it is
A swimlane diagram is a process diagram divided into horizontal or vertical lanes, one for each person, team or system responsible for steps. Arrows crossing lanes show handoffs. The lanes might be departments, job roles or systems, and each task box sits in the lane of the one who performs it.
Why it matters
It makes responsibility visible. Many delays happen at handoffs, and swimlanes make it easy to count them and to see who is waiting on whom. It also clarifies accountability: if a box has no clear lane, then nobody owns that step, which is itself a finding for the analyst.
Example
A swimlane for Tidewater Insurance claims has lanes for Customer, Claims Handler, Fraud Team and Finance. A claim crosses lanes six times, and the analyst highlights two crossings where claims wait for days. Redesigning those handoffs, for example by giving the fraud team direct access to the claim, became the biggest saving in the TO-BE design.
